Photography by Henning Bock –

A little while ago I was watching an episode of Antiques Roadshow, one of my favourite tv shows, when a fantastic painting of several menacing looking rams (can’t remember who painted it) standing proudly on a ledge with a spectacular mountainous landscape in the background came up for valuation. The pageantry and idyllic beauty of this painting was just so wonderful that I have been on the lookout for something similar to hang on my wall ever since.

The work that ended my search is not a painting and is not an antique – what it is, is a photograph by the awesome hamburg based artist Henning Bock who, in my opinion, has not received any where near as much recognition as he should have. Diorama #6 is a photo from Bock’s DIORAMAS series which, to my delight, features three rams on a ledge with a beautiful mountain landscape in the background, just like the painting on the Antiques Roadshow. What I particularly love about this work is the way that Bock has captured the scene in a way that combines painterly effects with naturalistic reality to create a scenario where the fine line between the real and unreal become blurred. The concepts of life and death, real and unreal are challenged in this work by Bock whose unique approach to wildlife photography has resulted in an image that is strangely unsettling yet extremely intriguing.
