While you have some time off over the Christmas period you might like to spend some time doing some research on art and art investment. There are plenty of sites on the net that can provide you with information on artists such as,,,,, and many others. You might also want to subscribe to an art magazine such as ARTnews magazine, Flash Art Magazine or Art and Auction magazine  There may be other magazines more specific to the country you live in so a quick search online for art magazine should provide you with other options.

On a lighter note the website recently allowed people to bet on how much they thought artworks would sell for at auction. Not exactly the safest investment but a fun and interesting idea none the less.

There are also several great books that may give you some further knowledge and insight such as “Collecting Contemporary” by Adam Lindemann. Interviews with gallerists, art consultants, auctioneers and curators. Published by Taschen, Cologne 2006.

  1. I noticed you mentioned a lot of different research sites, but failed to mention which offers the most comprehensive online database of fine art and antique auction results in the world. Completely searchable to subscribers, the data includes complete catalog descriptions, photos and prices realized for millions of works of art and decorative art. This database is used by the foremost dealers, auction houses, appriaers and museums in the world. Artfact also offers complete searchable upcoming auction catalogs online and an “Art Advisor” service to alert you by email when one of your chosen artists is coming up for auction. Artfact also provides services to auction houses to help them gain market share by hosting their auctions live online. Artfact recently acquired in the UK, and so its database and services will be accessible through both websites.
